Episode 4: Shore to Host

The guest room challenge is here and for our team, it’s major. We had big plans much like in previous challenges but it all comes down to what we execute, right?

Let’s start with the basics. We’ve got walls and that’s about it. Popcorn has to come down on the ceilings, skim coat, new floor plan, drywall, paint, new floors and then the design. The budget is always tight for design, but I did what I could with the funds that were available.

We are adding a full bathroom, (surprise) powder room, and closet. Where’s the closet? Right inside of the fireplace! Genius idea from Brandon who saw an opportunity after the fireplace build. Adding storage to a floor plan in a room that didn’t have one to us was a major plus.

The powder room will be nestled in partly where the old bathroom used to be. And a powder room on the same level as the living and dining was a great alternative for guests that didn’t need to walk through a bedroom to get to a bathroom.

The accent wall in the bedroom was made from a reed fencing came from Home Depot that was pretty inexpensive. I envisioned that along with a ledge above the bed all to coordinate as a headboard for both beds. The goal was to create a serene getaway for multiple guests to relax. We also included multiple light sources because you always need options for lighting but a fan is also a must in this southern beach house.

The individual lights next to the beds were infividually controlled and directional…much better than a canned light that is usually fixed. We fell a bit short here on my full vision but there are parts of this space that I absolutely love.

The full bathroom shower tile was an indigo blue color with various shades of dark blues and blackish shades featured on the tile. The shower niche and floor had shades of blue as well, contributing to the relaxing feel of the space. The hanging tapestry in the guest bed was a beautiful texture and gradient of colors that complimented the other colors in the room. I found the mirrors for both bathrooms at a local antique shop. More on the powder room bath mirror down below. The nautical looking oval shaped mirror was a perfect size and shape for the bathroom.

The powder room! I used a limewash from Pertola Paints to finish this space and the video/pictures don’t do it any justice! It was my first time doing limewash but it won’t be my last. The vessel sink was a deal from Wayfair and it gave a very unique look to the powder without taking up too much space. The tile on the floor here was a perfect compliment to the space as well.

All in all, we created a bedroom that could sleep 2 or more, a powder room that didn’t exist for guests that visit the house. It’s more than I’ve ever done in this short period of time and for that, I’m proud!

Secrets Revealed!

  • We thought the closet install defeated the purpose of full on built ins next to the beds. We also didn’t have time to build. The alternative nightstands didn’t arrive in time!

  • The bathtub removal was an oversight that was missed at the rebuild stage and I fully believe that a full bath would have added more value.

  • The powder room mirror (not pictured) was also an antique from the early 1900s (it was written in the frame!). The glass of the mirror was haphazardly shaking around inside the failing frame when we first purchased it. I used a pin nailer and bonding glue to pull it back together and the dark wood tones in that complimented the green walls so well.
